O-7. CHASE BICYCLES

Chasing a bicycle is tricky. You have no true intention of catching the bicycle because, though the bike incites your uncontrollable rage, you know you'd never hurt the rider. You do, however, need to prepare yourself: getting too close could mean a firm kick in the snout by a trained athlete. These calculations should help.

The bicyclist's legs ( L) are both 0.6 m long. Should he kick backwards to shoo you away, his leg ( LB ) will form an isosceles triangle (ABC) with his opposite leg ( LA ). The angle (θ) of 50° formed by the intersection of AB will help you determine the distance his foot will travel ( C).

The distance his foot will travel as he pedals can be determined by the Law of Cosines.
